The Values Exercise

You are about to begin an exercise that will help you identify the values by which you would ideally live your life.  It is important that you think about the “ideal you” and the "real you".  With some people the real and ideal are closely matched.  With others, they are out of alignment.  This exercise is the first step to measuring whether or not you are living in alignment.

How it Works

You will begin with a list of 76 values.  Each value has a short definition describing it.  To access the definition, hover your cursor over the value.  You will be asked to select all the values that ideally are important to you.  You will then be asked to narrow the list three times until you arrive at the five values that ideally are most important to you.

What is 360-Degree Feedback?
360-degree feedback is a method of gathering information from various people with whom you interact.  At work, those people might be peers/colleagues, your leader, people who report to you, or even customers and clients.  Some 360-degree feedback tools, including ours, allow you to gather feedback from people outside of work – like friends and family.

The 360-degree feedback tool gathers information from these people and summarizes the responses into a data report.  In that data report, the different rater groups (i.e., peers, customers, your leader, etc.) are displayed so you can see how those groups rated you.  An example of a 360-degree feedback report is available here.

The feedback report you receive will be very intuitive and easy to interpret.  Even so, it is a common practice to seek out a leadership development coach to help you understand your results.  A coach can also help you create an individual development plan that will allow you to focus on your strengths and areas for development.

This is a Unique Approach
Because the content is completely customized for you, this values based approach is very unique among 360-degree feedback tools.  Many companies have their feedback tools revolve around values and principles that are important to the company, but those values and principles are not necessarily shared by everyone within the company.  This tool puts the emphasis on you and what your ideal values are.

Why Living in Alignment   is Important

For those who desire to be the best they can be in the various roles they have in life, living in alignment is absolutely critical.

Living in alignment is about aligning one's "real" behaviors with one's "ideal" values.  It is both as simple and as difficult as that!

Are You Living in Alignment?

Once you have identified the five values that are most important to you, the work begins.  Discovering how well you are living by those values is vitally important.

Self-assessment is necessary in determining if you are living "ideally", but it is not sufficient.  Feedback from those people closest to you will give you a more complete picture of how you are "really" living.

It takes great courage to ask others how you are living.  It takes even greater courage to accept their feedback and make a commitment to changing the behaviors that need to be changed.

The method we use to measure your "real self" is called 360-degree feedback.
